In 2009 the newly sponsored TFM-Celtic Decor team were ready to travel with a full strength team to compete in the Masters section of the ToB. Tragedy struck Mick Day who broke a collar bone two weeks away from the event and he was unable to defend the title he won in 2008. So that year the old warhorse of racing, David Sturt, pictured right (AKA Steggles) took home the yellow jersey. It was success still for TFM as they are one of the sponsors of Cycling Inform. David also rides a Giant.

Coming into this year's race tragedy struck Celtic again with Gerry Donnelly crashing in the Dandenongs again just a few weeks out from the event of the year. Dislocating his shoulder and damaging the tendon, his race was effectively over. Added to this bad luck, Boyd Friis was out of the race after suffering several viral bouts over the preceding weeks.

The Performance of Giant Di2 --
Adrian delivered the first of the 2011 Giant bikes to TFM-Celtic Decor several months ago now. As a matter of fact TFM was one of the first bike stores in Australia to put people on these flagship models.

Effectively the 2011 model is the same as last year’s with a different colour scheme. Some people may think they would rather buy a bike that was new for the new year rather than a dressed up old one! That would be your first mistake. Giant over the years have regularly updated their models. So you'd be right in thinking that there must be a reason why this model has not been updated. That reason is, Perfection! I know, you’re thinking I'm getting paid to say that. If you are really convinced of that then I can't change your mind with the written word. What I can say is - ride one of these beasts. I love that fact that when I'm sitting in a break away, no one knows when I'm changing gears to conserve energy or when about to increase the tempo. They can't hear because Di2 is whisper quiet and changes and has made an effective change before the guy in front of me has had a chance to react. For that matter, unless the guy behind is looking at your rear mech, he won't know either.
Another striking feature of this bike is the balance. Whether you are flying down a decent at 80+km per hour, flying through tight corners in a criterium race, out of the saddle up Mt Hotham's CBR hill or cruising on Beach Rd, you are always comfortable and always in full control. Add to this a stiff and light frame and Giant has a winner on all counts. So why is it the same frame as last year – it can't get better at the moment and change isn't made for any other reason. Just look at the pointy end of any big race or club race and you'll see the Giant logo. As for Di2, the word is slowly getting round that this cable-less incarnation of Shimano is like comparing a Ferrari shift to a Truck double clutching.
This Month's Tip
Chain wear: Did you know that if you maintain your chain well and replace it before the wear becomes excessive you can actually save hundreds of dollars!
Seems a bit far fetched hey - spend money to save money! Well it's actually right. Firstly a dirty chain will wear considerably faster than a clean one. So keep your chain clean. You can use a chain cleaning device made for the job (TFM can show you one) or you can clean with a rag and a citrus based solvent. I like citrus based solvents. They are strong enough to do the job but not so strong that they can affect the shiny bits and pieces on your prized bike. Of course your chain will still wear, but much slower. How often do you need to do this? Chains are not meant to be black. If it's black, it's long overdue for a clean. Secondly, as the chain wears it wears the teeth of the front chainrings and the rear cassette. If left too long, not only will you have to replace the chain but also the rear cassette and perhaps even the front chainrings. This can add up to hundreds of dollars. Replacing the chain when it begins to show signs of wear rather than when it HAS worn out means only spending $50-$70. Lastly if you want to see HOW to do it - just go into a TFM store and they’ll run you through the process and show you any tools you might need. You can also go to Youtube and look at one of hundreds of how to videos on the subject. Here is one:
