PROFILE

The Freedom Machine was founded in April 1975 by Paul Chaleyer and James Byrne with the intention of selling only the highest quality bikes.

At that time the only brands that the business sold were Raleigh, Gitane and Peugeot.

The business was sold in 1978 to Trevor Spry who had it until 1987 when the current owner Adrian Curnow took over.

The Freedom Machine also runs a Road and Mountain Bike team with the most notable results being the following:

  • Wes Bielski 96/97 World Veteran X-Country Champion,
  • Mark Hastie Australian Veteran Road Champion 95/96 and
  • Ben Meadley 4 x Victorian Track Titles from 1992 - 1995.
  • Our team also held until recently the World unofficial 24 Hour Audax record of 770km.

The Freedom Machine is located just outside the Melbourne CBD in the centre of the thriving shopping strip of Chapel Street, South Yarra. Well noted for its restaurants, clothes shops and with an atmosphere all of its own.

The Freedom Machine now sells Avanti, Giant, Specialized, Raleigh and Look.

In 1992 the Freedom Machine diversified into software research and in conjunction with Microsports in 1996 released the Total Fit Matrix program.

The primary objective in producing the program was to create a quick efficient and accurate way of measuring someone up for both custom and production frames.

The algorithms which form the basis of the program were tested over four years and on hundreds of riders.

The program asks for seven measurements including inseam, torso length, thigh length etc. and from these it calculates the optimum frame size in custom made or in the case of a production bike, the most appropriate frame available.

It also then calculates the stem length, crank length, saddle height and recess.

In the case of a custom made frame the program also calculates all angles, top tube length, chain stay and fork rake.
